I’ll Never Ask for the Storm

I’ll never ask for the storm
that strikes down the trees, breaks my windows, or floods my farm.

I’ll never hope for the suffering
that shadows ruin.
I will weep for the loss
and pine for restoration.
But I’ll never suppose that the sun ought not shine.
For, sunshine never caused a storm.

I’ll never ask for you,
for you to hurt me, lose your temper, or forget to be true.

I’ll never hope for the suffering
that shadows ruin.
I will weep for the loss
and pine for restoration.
But I’ll never suppose that you ought not love me.
For love never broke a heart.

I will always ask you to love me,
to dance in the night,
to hold and to hug me.

If you want to be certain,
don’t look for love.

I’ll never hope for the suffering
that shadows ruin.
I will weep for the loss
and pray for restoration.
I’ll never suppose that you ought not love me,
but I’ll never ask for the storm.

  1. “shadows” is supposed to be a verb. I noticed the ambiguity. I chose it because of its surreptitious connotation in lieu of “follows” or “accompanies.”
